on top of the "new" dent I just put in the passenger side, something seems to be wrong with my clutch. It doesnt happen all the time but when I downshift through 2nd it makes a grinding noise, not to mention the fact that since I bought the car you can't shift to 1st unless the car is at a complete stop. Also, especially when its cold out, the clutch pedal is like an inch off the floor and It is almost impossible to get it into gear. Just wanted to know what you guys thought before I take it down to the shop. Thanks in advance-ty

Well I have the same problem with first gear in my car but I don't have the grinding sound. My clutch holds perfectly all the way to and above 8k rpms so I don't think its your clutch, but I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks for the quick respones everyone. As far as shifting to first goes, it doesnt matter if im going as low as 5 mph, it still does it. The guy I bought the car from did say he had the clutch replaced at some point, so I am not 100% sure it is an oem clutch. I just went outside with a flashlight and checked the the fluid, which I am assuming is in the resevoir near the drivers side fender closest to the corner/windshield. What little fluid that is in there now is dark in color. There is a little plastic disk sitting in there also, which is at the is laying on the bottom. Hopefully this was the right place to check, as you can probably tell my knowledge of engines isnt that extensive. Ill go buy some brake fluid in the morning and let you all know what happens.

I'm thinking clutch master cylinder and the slave cylinder would be the problem if the fluid level is at the full mark and looks clean, not muddy looking, if bleeding it doesn't help, and as you didn't state any slipping problems or rpms going up and not gaining speed. As to the grinding, d series transmissions are not noted for being able to take much abuse, grinding in gear/s is one sign, along with the front bearing going out on them from an heavy duty/dragstrip type clutch being installed (they force the mainshaft back into the case during hard shifting from the force of the clutch engaging). As to shifting down to first gear, it should only be done under 20-25 mph if at all, remember your maxed out/redlined at about 28 mph in first anyway with either a d or b motor.
All Honda transmission are fully synchromeshed in all forward gears, first included. And the only problem I ever have with my transmission (besides having to replace the clutch because of having a piece break off the spring holder on the pressure plate and getting trapped between the disk and pressure plate) is getting it into reverse and it's a design flaw/problem, not a user problem.

Well, I added brake fluid to the resevoir this morning, and it didn't help. There still was alot of black stuff at the bottom though. I took it down to get it looked at after I got back from college today. The mechanic said he would bleed the fluid and replace it or whatever, and see if there was anything else wrong. Hopefully it isnt something too major.

well, sigh*, they replaced the clutch master cylinder, and they charged me $210.68 for it. At least I can drive again. It sucks sitting around at the college for 3 hours trying to get ahold of someone to give you a ride. I ended up walking like 2 miles along the side of the freeway yesterday to 7-11.

I hope they replaced both the clutch master cylinder and the slave for that price. Anyway you now have your car back and no more walking. I feel your pain. Glad to hear that it's fixed.

Guess I spoke to soon. Was driving home today and it wouldn't excelerate at all. Could smell something burning as well. It took probably like 30-45 seconds to get going faster than 10mph, and that was at like 6k rpms. sooo, its down getting worked on again. This is really starting to irritate me.
